Project brief & summary

This project involved removing internal walls to combine two separate rooms into a single, open space, allowing the layout to fully embrace the property’s position overlooking the River Crouch. The intention was to create a kitchen environment that felt open, social and visually connected to the landscape beyond.

Large panoramic sliding doors were introduced, opening onto a balcony and framing uninterrupted views across the river. The client was keen to incorporate an industrial influence within the design, with a brick-built feature wall adding texture and architectural character to the space.

The brief also reflected a broader shift in how modern homes are used. While the lounge still plays an important role, kitchens have increasingly become the place where people naturally gather, spending time cooking, talking and socialising together. The aim was therefore to design a kitchen that comfortably supports this lifestyle, offering a welcoming and sociable environment without losing efficiency or practicality.

The result is a space that feels open, characterful and perfectly positioned to enjoy its surroundings.

Description

Material selection was key in establishing the industrial character of the space while maintaining a refined, contemporary feel. Entzo quartz worktops were used across both the island and perimeter runs, paired with a matching quartz riser to create clean, uninterrupted surfaces and a durable preparation area suited to everyday cooking and entertaining.

Cabinetry was finished in a copper-toned slate effect with a handleless profile, introducing depth and texture that complements the exposed brick feature wall. Opposite the panoramic doors, a full-height run of tobacco oak handleless cabinetry forms a strong architectural backdrop, housing two single ovens and a combi oven positioned centrally within the elevation.

The large island extends into a generous peninsula where the work surface transitions to a smoked oak finish. A waterfall detail runs along the full width of the peninsula wall, creating a dramatic focal point and providing seating for six, reinforcing the social intention of the layout.

Within the island, tinted glass display cabinets and a wine fridge introduce both functionality and visual interest. Lighting plays an important role throughout, with plinth lighting, riser lighting and cabinet-top illumination used to highlight the textured brick feature wall and enhance the overall atmosphere of the space.

The flooring is a 900 × 900mm copper-tone porcelain tile supplied by Marshall & Ball, adding warmth and texture that complements the industrial aesthetic of the space. Worktops were supplied by Marchetti Stoneand finished in Dekton Entzo, while a wine fridge was also incorporated within the design to support the kitchen’s social and entertaining focus.
