This project formed part of a rear extension designed to transform the ground floor into a bright, expansive social setting. The brief centred around creating a kitchen that felt open, airy and connected to the garden, with full-length picture windows stretching across the rear elevation to maximise natural light.

While the space was to be highly sociable — incorporating a defined dining area and a relaxed sofa zone — the client was equally clear that cooking functionality could not be compromised. The kitchen needed to perform efficiently, with a layout that supported everyday use while remaining visually calm within the wider open-plan environment.

Exposed brickwork was retained as a key architectural feature, adding warmth and character against the otherwise light and contemporary palette.

The ambition was to achieve a seamless blend of industrial texture and modern refinement — a space that feels welcoming and effortless by day, yet atmospheric and intimate as evening draws in.

Description

The aesthetic balances classic joinery with contemporary restraint. Painted in-frame cabinetry establishes a sense of craftsmanship and permanence, while the overall palette remains fresh and architectural. The cabinetry is finished in a soft, neutral tone and paired with gunmetal bar handles, introducing subtle industrial character that complements the exposed brickwork within the extension.

Plain white quartz worktops were selected for both perimeter runs and the generous central island, paired with a matching quartz upstand to maintain clean, uninterrupted lines. The simplicity of the surface allows the natural light from the full-height picture windows to take centre stage, enhancing the bright and airy atmosphere.

The large island provides seating for three and incorporates an integrated wine fridge, reinforcing the social intention of the space. A stainless steel instant hot water tap adds practical refinement without distraction.

A freestanding sofa and dining table complete the open-plan arrangement, ensuring the kitchen flows effortlessly into relaxed living and entertaining zones.
