Project brief & summary

This project formed part of a complete knock-down and rebuild, offering the rare opportunity to design the kitchen entirely around lifestyle rather than constraint. The client’s vision was clear: a dramatic, open-plan social space that would anchor the rear of the home and blur the boundaries between cooking, dining and relaxing.

Unlike a chef-focused brief, the emphasis here was on atmosphere and flow. The kitchen was to act as a refined backdrop to family life and entertaining, seamlessly connected to a generous dining zone and a comfortable seating area centred around a feature television wall.

A defining architectural feature of the design is an expansive roof lantern stretching almost the full width of the rear elevation. This floods the interior with natural light, enhancing ceiling height and creating a striking sense of scale.

The objective was to deliver a space that feels expansive yet intimate, modern, light-filled and purposefully designed for gathering, hosting and everyday living.

Description

The expansive proportions of the room allowed for a confident, layered material palette. A full-height run of slate-textured handleless cabinetry frames the four-oven bank, introducing depth and architectural weight to one elevation. This darker finish contrasts elegantly with the hand-painted light grey used across the remaining low and high-level units, as well as the main island, creating balance within the open-plan setting.

White quartz worktops were selected for both islands and the perimeter runs, paired with a matching quartz up-stand to maintain clean, uninterrupted lines. Along the perimeter walls, a mirrored splash-back was installed above the work surfaces, amplifying natural light from the wide spanning lantern and enhancing the sense of scale across the rear of the property.

The central island provides seating for three and incorporates the hob with a ceiling-mounted extract above, preserving open sightlines across the room. A chrome instant hot water tap was specified within the scheme, introducing a refined yet highly practical detail.

A secondary dresser-style island, complete with wine fridge and dedicated storage, forms a subtle bar area — elegantly dividing the dining space from the relaxed sofa and television zone while maintaining visual cohesion.
